Brian Mettler

Brian Lee Mettler, age 53 of Menno, SD passed away Monday, March 9, 2026 at the Freeman Regional Hospital, Freeman, SD.

Brian Lee Mettler was born January 31, 1973 to Ron and Marcia Mettler at Freeman, SD. He graduated from Menno High School. Following graduation, he continued the family legacy of building the best Hereford herd alongside his father and later with his children. He achieved the honor of raising his herd on the original homestead of his great grandfather. The operation currently spans 5 generations. He took great pride in his cattle, always striving to produce maternally sound females that in turn produced highly functional herd bulls. Some of the highlights of his herd included multiple dams of distinction, Rival – Gold Trophy Sire and Sire of Distinction, Juice Box – nationally recognized ABS herd bull, Rampage – nationally known AI sire and Eastwood – South Dakota Supreme Champion Bull 2021 and Senior Bull Reserve Champion at the Kansas City Royal. His cattle meant a lot to him but what he was most proud of was his family. He valued working daily alongside his father, Ron and was excited to share his cattle knowledge with his children.

His greatest joy was his wife and children. When they weren’t busy raising cattle and farming, they made time to escape to the Black Hills to explore the trails and all the adventures they found along the way. He cherished the quiet times with his wife and children on their numerous trips. It was extra special when his dad and brother could join them on trips.

Brian was diagnosed with adrenal cortical carcinoma in 2009. Despite, the poor prognosis he persevered through 16 plus years of multiple experimental treatments and surgeries. On March 9th he won his battle and was welcomed into the arms of his loving Savior.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Teresa; their children Brooklyn and Jaxen Mettler of Menno, SD; His father Ron Mettler, of Menno SD; Brother Kevin (Kerry) Mettler of Sioux Falls SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and special friends. He is missed dearly by his dog, Flash, his Bassett Hound.

Brian is preceded in death by his mother, Marcia and infant brother Brett; his maternal grandparents, Norbert and Angeline Bowar; paternal grandparents Ray and Velma Mettler.
