Almeda Lois (Varney) Wolfgram was born on August 25, 1934, the eldest daughter of John and Eunice Varney. Four sisters would follow: Iris, Jean, Vera and Kassie. The Varney’s lived on Martha Varney’s homestead (John’s mother) south of Rhame, ND. Almeda spent her childhood herding sheep and working with cattle alongside her dad and family. She grew to know well the joy and sorrow of lambing, calving and ranch life in general. Being the oldest, she was often tasked with taking care of her younger sisters. Almeda attended Sunset Butte School until 8th grade, then along with Iris and Jean, she moved into Rhame for high school. Senior year, she met Alden Wolfgram at the highway dedication dance in Marmarth. It was love at first sight and they were married on June 27, 1953, at the Varney Ranch.
They began their 69 years together at the Wolfgram Homestead north of Rhame and raised two children: Shem born in 1958 and John in 1960. Almeda was a very hard-working ranch wife and mother. Cattle chores, fencing, farming, milking, gardening, canning, cooking, mending and care taking of the young and old…..She did it all. Almeda always loved Hereford Cattle and helped develop the herd that she and Alden carefully bred. She learned to crochet from her mother-in-law and loved hosting big family picnics and holiday gatherings. She enjoyed neighbors, friends and family just stopping by to visit. Almeda spent 20 years as a member of the Bowman/Slope Social Services Board. Alden and Almeda went to many auction sales and loved just going for a drive. They were always together and true soul mates.
Almeda will always be loved and remembered by her children, Shem (Dwight) Iverson and John Wolfgram (Cindy Blake), grandchildren; Jay (Karen) Iverson, Randy Iverson (Stormy Lermeny) and great grandchildren, Ava, Emma and Livy Iverson, sisters and brother-in-law, Jean Buchholz, Vera Kruger, Kassie and Kermit Kruger and many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
